Course

Participants at work

The course has been very interesting, although I use internet in my day to day work in this course I have learned some new things like how it is possible to use different websites to find information.
The most interesting thing was making a blog and being able to post and publish some articles and even pictures from different websites and blogs, though it will be more interesting in the future to be able to post pictures which were not copied from other websites or blogs.Another interesting thing was being able to create links.

Nestle boycott

Almost at the end of last year the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority –TFDA cautioned the public not to use or buy the powder milk with batch number one of Nido and Lactogen produced in South Africa due to the fact that The South African company which was producing them had given a warning of those milk having some elements of melamine which was not good for the health.

Nido milk produced in South Africa batch No 1 was said not be safe

The warning echoed in different media outlets in the country including The Ippmedia papers followed a wave of information from other countries especially in Asia of children dying because of taking milk with melamine elements.
As there is a saying in Swahili which goes as prevention is better than cure, TFDA went further and did a random check up in supermarkets in the country and assured Tanzanians that they have not found such milk with problems.
Though health experts has always recommended babies to be breastfed especially the first months after they were born rather than being bottle fed there have not been a huge campaign against a certain milk production company in order to support breastfeeding and fight bottle feeding methods .
Of late it was only last year when such an alert was given and that was due to the fact that the South African company had issued a warning about some of its milk products.

Nestle products being removed from supermarkets

Although in this part of the world the warnings have started recently in other countries of the world there has been boycott campaigns against Nestle products since 1977 in the United States and spread to Europe in 1980s.
Those who are for the boycott have different reasons including campaigns against bottle feeding and supporting breastfeeding.
The campaigners of this theory support it by using the World Health Organisation –WHO and United Nations Children’s Fund -UNICEF facts that one million and five hundred thousand children die annually because they are not breastfed. And it is revealed by WHO and UNICEF that the child who is bottle fed is 25 times more likely to suffer from diarrhea than the one who is breastfed. This is due to the fact that utensils like bottles that are used for feeding the baby may not be clean enough.
There are networks like International Baby Food Action Network – IBFAN and blogs and websites like www.babymilkaction.org which are at the forefront to fight Nestle milk products.

As many of these campaigners have been specifically attacking Nestle company milk products, the company in different occasions and countries has been issuing statements verifying the safety of its products.
The question to consumers remain how safe are the Nestle products? Because once the image of the company is tarnished it is not going to be the same as before let it be for children or adult consumers.
And is it like the milk products are being used only by infants and children to justify the boycott for the sake of fighting bottle feeding in order to support breastfeeding? If so does the boycott affect other milk products apart from those produced by the Nestle company or it is a business competition.
